You can work it out by the betting if you pay close-enough attention

Many apologies for the two month sabbatical from Tip of the Day – I hope that you have all just about survived those poker tables without my amazing words of wisdom. hehe.

I was playing last night online for the first time in ages, and I was playing some limit hold’em cash game. Nothing too exciting there. However there was one particular hand that I played which stuck out as my reading of the betting was pretty good and it shows that if you actually pay attention to what’s going on then you can put that player on a hand much easier:

I had A8u and had flat called in late position. There were currently about 6 others in the pot! – the flop comes down:

6-7-3 rainbow and everyone checks it round to my friend to my right, he bets and I raise on the principle that I have two over cards. Everyone else folds! He calls. The turn comes another 7 and he checks, myself still not improving happily checks as he either has the 7 or maybe has an over pair. The river comes another 3. He bets and I decide to call, only reason being that if he has a 7 then fair enough, but I can not lose any more than this one bet and if he doesn’t and only had two over cards or middle pair on the flop, then I have the Ace so will end up either splitting the pot or taking it with two pair and Ace kicker. He turns over K7s

Now – if you go back and look at this maybe I shouldn’t have called that last bet on the river as I was fairly certain I was up against the 7 full house. (then again I wouldn’t have known for sure and couldn’t have written this! 50cents well spent I think hehe)  Look at it – he called a raise after betting at the flop, would he have called with bottom pair? I doubt it. Middle pair ? it’s possible. However I don’t see this as a big mistake but I do see it as a great opportunity to show that you can get the information if you look for it. I played very well for the next 20 mins and made a swift $10 – lovely.

Any views much appreciated – and although you can’t see it from the bank we now have our “new look” stonecoldbluff.co.uk up and running so check it out when you are next on at home.

Grosvenor Casino

So we all went down to the swanky Grosvenor Casino in Edgware Road, London last night because it was BazzyG’s birthday and we all fancied a bit of a punt. Arriving around 10pm, it was the first time any of us had been to this casino and so we all had to sign up for membership. Interesting to note that my Hard Rock casino membership was also good for the Grosvenor too. Handy.

The Grosvenor was a fairly typical casino offering the standard roulette, blackjack, 3 card poker, etc as you will find in many UK casinos. There were limits for all kinds of bankrolls starting from min £5 roulette and min £10 blackjack upwards. There was a nice casual atmosphere – nothing hyper exciting but not too dull – just nice.

But we didn’t come for the blackjack or the atmosphere, we came for the poker! Situated towards the back of the casino ground floor and taking up a percentage of the first floor are poker tables. Games on offer to us were PL and NL cash tables of £25, £50, £100, and £200 to sit down.

We did find the table charge a little steep. For the £25 NL cash table that was self-dealt the charge was £4 per hour. And the tables themselves in my opinion were not amazing quality either. Gutshot tables are much nicer and their table charge is only £3 per hour self-dealt.

Also Friday night is a monster re-buy tourney night with £10 entry and unlimited £10 re-buys for the first hour. We didn’t have any of that thought – it was purely cash tables for us.

BazzyG got off to a blinding start and turned £25 into £80 in a matter of minutes. Duff and myself weren’t doing too bad and kel unfortunaltely got unlucky. Bless her – she had been sitting tight all night, raised all in preflop and her 77 ran into AQu. Between four of us after about 90 minutes play we were up about £60 which was nice.

Looking for a spot of food, we found a fine dining restaraunt upstairs and a bar food / snacky bit downstairs. All the food was spot on and the staff were nice and friendly even though we got them to re-arrange half the tables for us so we could all sit down (SCB + guests). I reccommend the duck wraps from the downstairs bar. mmmm.

Kels and I sat down to a bit of low limit video roulette while waiting for others to finish dining and made £18 out of a fiver.

By this time it is now about 1am and we sit down for another hour of poker before returning home. Maybe it was the drink, maybe it was the tiredness but we all ended up getting butchered in the second half of our night. The cards were just not going Duff’s way where each draw just didn’t come for him. Kels kept getting raised out of pots and I had my TT busted by JJ!

We walked out the casino at 2am with a little less than what we went in with but then for such a good night’s entertainment and for the celebration of BazzyG’s birthday it was well worth it.

Losing Streak

Anyone ever been on the receiving end of a really bad losing streak? Its happening to me lately and I really do not know what ot do about it.

Its not like I’m playing bad or anything. Its stupid stuff like flopping top pair with nice kicker and getting beat by overpair. Its things like hitting trip 4s on the flop when at the same time someone else has hit trip tens. Its like always going in with the best hand and getting to the turn where the only solitary card left that could possibly beat you in the entire deck innocently falls out on the river.

Man, nothing I do seems to be the correct thing. Ive stayed away from online poker for a week now because of it. One week later I sat down last night and lost $20 in the blink of an eye.

Whats going on? Anyone else have a bad run of the cards? How do you deal with it?

Decided to move up to $10 last night.  Two games lost but interesting games and very different to $5.  More honest, better players (tighter at least).
